The Symbols of the Philippine Flag
The Philippine flag is rich in meaning. Its blue stripe stands for peace, truth and justice, while its red stripe represents patriotism and valor. The white triangle symbolizes equality and fraternity. Inside the triangle is a golden sun with eight rays, which represent the first eight provinces that rose in revolt against Spain: Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna and Batangas. The three stars at the corners of the triangle stand for the three major island groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. One special feature of the flag is that it can signal a state of war. In times of peace, the blue stripe is on top. In times of war, the flag is displayed with the red stripe on top. Because the flag represents the nation, the law requires that it be treated with respect. It should never be used as a costume, a tablecloth or an advertisement.
