Duck, Cover, and Hold
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Because of this, Filipinos must be ready for strong earthquakes at any time. Schools, offices, and government agencies regularly hold earthquake drills so that people know what to do. The most important action during an earthquake is to "duck, cover, and hold." This means dropping to the ground, taking cover under a sturdy table or desk, and holding on to it until the shaking stops. People should stay away from windows, glass, and heavy objects that might fall. After the shaking stops, they should calmly leave the building using the stairs, not the elevator, and go to an open area away from buildings, trees, and electric posts. Families are also encouraged to prepare a "go bag" containing water, food, a flashlight, a whistle, medicine, and copies of important documents. Being prepared does not stop an earthquake from happening, but it can save many lives.
