ECE Board April 1998: The sides of a triangle are 8, 15 and 17 units. If each side is doubled, how many square units will the area of the new triangle be?

  1. 240
  2. 420
  3. 320
  4. 200

Answer

A. 240

Solution

The original triangle (sides 8,15,17) is a right triangle with area 12(8)(15)=60. Doubling all sides scales the area by 22=4, giving a new area of 60×4=240 sq. units.
