The sum of the ages of three children is 36. The eldest is as old as the other two combined. Three years ago, the eldest was 3 times as old as the youngest. How old is the middle child?
- 10
- 8
- 18
- 12
Answer
A. 10
Solution
Let the ages be E, M, Y. From E=M+Y and E+M+Y=36: 2E=36, so E=18 and M+Y=18. Three years ago: 18-3=3(Y-3) 15=3Y-9 Y=8. Then M=18-8=10.
